How to play

  1. Choose 1 Player and a difficulty (Easy, Medium or Hard), or 2 Players to share one device.
  2. Pieces move one square diagonally forward onto an empty dark square. Select a piece and its legal squares light up: a dot for a step, a ring for a jump.
  3. Capture by hopping diagonally over a rival piece onto the empty square behind it. If any capture is possible you must take one: the pieces that can capture are ringed.
  4. After a jump, keep hopping if the same piece can capture again. When there is only one way to continue, the piece carries on by itself; when there are two, you pick the next hop.
  5. Reach the far row to crown a king. A king moves and captures diagonally forwards and backwards, and is worth far more than a plain piece.
  6. You win when your opponent has no pieces left or no legal move. If 40 moves each pass with no capture and no plain piece moving, the game is a draw.
  7. Tip: keep your back row filled as long as you can, so the other side can't crown a king cheaply.
  8. Tip: pieces in the middle of the board have the most options; pieces on the edge are safe but slow.
  9. Tip: when you are ahead, trade pieces. Every even swap brings the end closer and makes your extra piece count for more.
  10. Tip: watch for two-for-one shots. Offering one piece to pull a rival into a double jump is the oldest trick in checkers, and Hard uses it too.
  11. Rematches alternate who moves first. Your record and fastest win are kept separately for Easy, Medium and Hard.

About Checker Hop

Play Checker Hop online for free: classic checkers with forced jumps and kings against an Easy, Medium or Hard computer, or a friend on one device.

Classic 8x8 checkers with bouncy pieces and a computer opponent that thinks like a person. Hop diagonally over rival pieces to capture them, chain several hops into one turn, and crown a king when a piece reaches the far row. Captures are forced, just like the American rules you learned at the kitchen table, so the board always tells you when a jump is waiting: the pieces that must capture wear a dashed ring. Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy plays any legal move and grabs the biggest capture it sees, so it is a gentle way to learn. Medium looks three moves ahead and will punish a piece you leave hanging. Hard searches many moves ahead (six or more on most devices) within a fraction of a second and plays a patient positional game: it guards its back row, trades when it is ahead and hunts your last pieces down with its kings. Or switch to 2 Players and pass one phone, tablet or laptop back and forth, with an undo button for honest mistakes. Your wins, losses and draws are kept for each difficulty, along with your fastest win, and an unfinished game is saved, so a reload or a closed tab picks up exactly where you left off.

Checker Hop runs right in your browser on desktop, tablet and phone. There is nothing to download or install, and you don't need an account: press play and start.
