How to play

  1. Pick a track, then 1 player against three CPU karts or 2 players against two.
  2. Your kart accelerates on its own: steer to follow the track and brake before the tightest corners.
  3. Stay on the grey asphalt. The sand at the edges slows you down and the tyre wall stops you.
  4. Turn hard at full speed to slide. Hold the slide until BOOST! shows under your kart, then straighten out for a burst of speed.
  5. Finish three laps before the other karts. A lap only counts if you drive the whole track.
  6. When the first player crosses the line the second player has 20 seconds to finish.
  7. Tip: take wide corners on the outside, cut to the inside at the apex and let the kart drift back out on the exit. It is faster than hugging the inside all the way.
  8. Tip: the CPU karts slow down for hairpins too. Brake a touch later than they do and you can pass on the inside.
  9. In 2 players on a phone, hold it sideways: player 1 steers on the left half (left and right quarters), player 2 on the right half. Upright, player 2 uses the top half.
  10. Win a race against the CPU to move it up a level, up to level 5. Your best lap and race time for each track are kept on this device.
  11. Bumping is allowed: karts push each other around, so a well-timed nudge on the way into a corner can open a gap. Hitting the tyre wall costs far more time than it gains.
  12. If you end up facing a wall, hold brake: once the kart stops it backs up slowly, then steer away and you are off again.
  13. Every track is drawn in full on one screen, so you can see where the other karts are at all times and plan your overtakes. On an upright phone the track turns sideways to fill the screen.

About Kart Scramble

A mint go-kart with a smiling blob driver sliding around a red and white curb, leaving a trail of sparks

Play Kart Scramble online for free: top-down kart racing over 3 laps on 3 tracks. Drift for boosts and beat the CPU karts or a friend on one device.

Kart Scramble is a top-down kart race on tracks you can see from start to finish in one screen. Four little karts line up on the grid, three red lights go out and it is three laps to the flag. Your kart accelerates by itself, so racing is all about the line you take: steer through the curbs, brake for the hairpins and stay off the sand, which slows you right down. Hold a hard turn at speed and your kart breaks into a slide; keep it sliding through the corner and you charge a boost that fires when you straighten out. Three tracks each ask for something different: Pebble Loop is a flowing warm-up with one tight kink, Hairpin Hills packs in two hairpins and a twisty back section, and Dune Dash has a big jump-shaped dune and a slalom on the far side. The CPU karts each drive their own line, react a moment late and sometimes miss a turn-in; win a race and they step up a level, lose two in a row and they ease off. Race a friend on one keyboard or one phone, where each player holds their own half of the screen, with two CPU karts making up the grid. Your best lap and best race time are saved for each track.
